What is Shinrin-yoku?

Shinrin-yoku, which means “forest bathing” in Japanese, is the practice of intentionally slowing down and spending time in nature to engage all five senses. It was developed in Japan in the 1980s as a response to rising stress levels and disconnection from the natural world.

During a Shinrin-yoku experience, you move slowly and mindfully through a forest or natural space, noticing sights, sounds, smells, textures, and sensations. The goal isn’t exercise- it’s presence. Research has shown that this practice can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, improve mood, and enhance overall well-being.

Do I need to be physically fit or outdoorsy to participate?

Not at all. Forest bathing is slow, gentle, and accessible to most people. Walks are typically less than a mile long and focus on presence, not pace.

If you have concerns about mobility, terrain, or accessibility please reach out. I'll always do my best to accommodate your needs and suggest the most suitable location.

What should I bring or wear?

Dress comfortably for the weather and wear sturdy shoes for walking on natural terrain. It’s a good idea to bring water, insect repellent, layers, and sun protection if needed.

Please also bring anything you personally need to stay comfortable and safe during the walk, such as medications, inhalers, or other essentials.

If journaling is part of your session, a notebook and pencil will be provided for you.

Is forest bathing suitable for all ages?

Forest bathing is a slow, sensory experience that’s generally best suited for adults and older teens. That said, I welcome families to reach out if they’re interested in a private session that may include children.

Because every child is different, I just ask that you connect with me first so we can decide together if it’s a good fit.

Trained service animals are always welcome. Pets are not permitted, to help maintain a calm, focused atmosphere for all participants.

How long does a Forest Bathing session last?

Forest Bathing sessions typically last between 1 to 1.5 hours allowing time to slow down, move mindfully, and settle into the natural rhythm of the forest.

While I do my best to stay within that range, I also guide intuitively. I honor the moment, individual/group needs, and the energy of the land.
